Writing a Detective Novel

Composing a detective novel requires careful story planning, signs, criminals, and motive(s) and a lot more. The writer must be manifest in the rational sequence of the account. It should be well penned, articulate, free flowing, and make the reader a visual participant of the big event taking place.

Unlike a movie in which the director can convey through visuals, presentation and sound, while writing a detective novel the writer must rely upon his writing power to express the scene, feelings, pain, delight, suspense or anger. The writer cannot show these expressions but has to describe them in a manner that you seems he can see them and not miss the visual impact of a cinema. 

Detective story building blocks while writing a detective novel could be:

– Who is the Detective: Defining a private investigator could be ‘someone who may be searching for the truth’.

– Brief outline of the plot. The pads can be rearranged later as the story grows.

– Background about the detective. Who is this individual as a person? Several information about his personal life and interests.

– Can some of the detective’s personal attributes be linked to the tale? What motivates the person – as someone and as a professional?

– Perhaps there is anyone else who assists her or him? It could be a colleague if the person is a professional Law Enforcement power or an amateur may well be a friend / family affiliate.

– A brief review of the crime or plot and precisely what is the reason or motive of the criminal offenses.

– Who will be / are the perpetrators or potential foods. Create a brief information of each along with possible motive of each.
